How to Choose the Right Food Container Size for Your Menu

23 July 2026

Container size is one of the most overlooked decisions in a takeaway or catering operation — yet it directly affects food presentation, spillage, delivery quality and cost. Here's how to size your containers properly.

Start with your portions, not the pack

Measure your actual portion sizes first, then choose the smallest container that holds the portion comfortably with a little headroom. Over-sized containers waste money and let food move around; under-sized ones spill and look mean.

Match the container to the dish

  • Dry / warm food: kraft food boxes present well and keep cost low.
  • Saucy / hot food: rigid containers or bagasse resist leaks and heat.
  • Sides & dips: portion sauce pots keep servings controlled.

Standardise to two or three core sizes

Stocking fewer sizes in volume simplifies ordering, unlocks bulk price breaks, and speeds up service because staff aren't hunting for the right box. Keep a couple of specials for outliers.

Factor in delivery

Flat bases and secure lids stack cleanly in delivery bags and reduce spills — protecting both your food and your reviews.
